Simplifying Operations with Bulk DEF Delivery

January 19, 2024|

Navigating the complexities of fleet management requires a reliable and efficient approach, especially when adhering to environmental regulations and optimizing performance. Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF), an essential component for modern diesel engines, plays a pivotal role in reducing emissions, and Jacobus Energy offers a comprehensive bulk DEF delivery service to meet the specific needs of your fleet. Understanding Diesel Exhaust Fluid and Its Advantages Diesel exhaust fluid, a mixture of two-thirds water and one-third urea, is crucial in reducing diesel engine emissions. Compliance with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines is mandatory for diesel engines manufactured from 2010 onwards which employ Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology.  DEF contributes to a cleaner environment by substantially lowering harmful emissions and also offers economic benefits. Vehicles equipped with SCR technology and DEF can achieve up to 5% fuel savings compared to similar 2007 engine models. Who Benefits from Bulk DEF Delivery? Bulk DEF delivery is a game-changer for various industries, particularly those that operate large fleets or have high DEF consumption needs. This includes transportation companies, logistics providers, construction firms, and agricultural enterprises. Utilizing the delivery of DEF allows for a consistent supply, reducing the risk of operational delays and enhancing overall efficiency. Why Diesel Fleets Need DEF and How It Supports SCR Systems

February 5, 2024|

Diesel exhaust fluid, commonly called DEF, plays an important role in many modern diesel vehicles and pieces of equipment. It works with a vehicle’s Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions from the exhaust stream. For fleets operating SCR-equipped trucks or equipment, maintaining an adequate supply of quality DEF is part of keeping those vehicles ready for daily operation. Understanding what DEF does, how it is used, and why its quality matters can help fleet operators make better decisions about purchasing, storage, and supply. It can also make it easier to determine whether packaged DEF or a scheduled supply program makes more sense for the operation. What Is Diesel Exhaust Fluid? Diesel exhaust fluid is a solution made from 32.5% technically pure urea and purified water. Unlike diesel fuel, DEF is not burned in the engine and should never be added to a diesel fuel tank. It is stored in a separate DEF tank and used as part of the vehicle’s emissions system. Many diesel vehicles and types of equipment use Selective Catalytic Reduction technology. Within an SCR system, DEF is introduced into the exhaust stream. The resulting chemical process helps convert nitrogen oxides, or NOx, into nitrogen and water vapor before the exhaust leaves the vehicle. The American Petroleum Institute also maintains standards and certification programs related to DEF quality. Because SCR systems depend on fluid with the proper composition and purity, fleets should pay attention not only to having DEF available, but also to how it is purchased, stored, and handled. Why DEF Matters for Diesel Fleets For fleets operating SCR-equipped diesel vehicles, DEF is a normal operating fluid rather than an optional additive. Keeping it available is part of managing those vehicles alongside diesel fuel, engine oil, coolant, and other routine operating needs. The challenge becomes more noticeable as a fleet grows. A business operating one or two diesel vehicles may be able to purchase individual containers as needed. A company managing dozens of trucks, construction vehicles, or other diesel-powered equipment has a much different supply requirement. That is where planning becomes important. Fleet operators need to consider how quickly DEF is being used, where vehicles are located, how much storage space is available, and how employees currently obtain and dispense the fluid. Looking at those factors can help determine which DEF options make the most sense for day-to-day operations. How SCR Systems Use DEF An SCR system is designed to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions after combustion has already taken place inside the engine. DEF is introduced into the exhaust rather than mixed with the diesel fuel itself. Once DEF enters the hot exhaust stream, reactions within the SCR system help convert nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water. This allows modern diesel engines to meet applicable emissions requirements while continuing to perform the work they were designed to handle. Because DEF is part of this emissions-control process, fleet operators should follow the vehicle or equipment manufacturer’s recommendations regarding the type and quality of
